Amsterdam is a city full of entertainment. With streets lined with bars and a world-renowned music scene, there's almost plenty for everybody. If you like a good drink or a typical local beer, you'll find the best nightlife in Amsterdam 's booming city centre.


From classic coffee shops (bruine kroeg) to classic bars with spectacular views of the area, Amsterdam’s bars have something to offer for everyone.

Café Papeneiland

Situated on a picturesque corner near Noordermarkt, this brown bar serves beer, wine and perhaps the best apple pie in town.

Café de Dokter

With a bazaar-like interior, this 19th century institution used to be a doctor’s cafe.

Proeflokaal Arendsnest

A beer bar with over 100 Dutch handicraft brews available.

Hannekes Boom

This shack-style waterfront cafe near Centraal Station is home to live music and DJs.

Super Lyan

This former Dutch house of the 17th century has been converted into a cocktail bar incorporating bright colors and neon signs. Make sure to order the margarita frozen on a summer day.


We can't round up the best nightlife in Amsterdam without considering the roaring coffee shops.

Tweede Kamer Coffeeshop

Tweede Kamer is one of the oldest coffee shops in the city centre. Sitting only 20 participants, it’s all in the typical apothecary style.

Barney’s Coffeeshop

This award-winning coffee shop is situated near the Haarlemmerstraat Centraal Station.

Boerejongens Coffeeshop

A little beyond the center you’ll find Boerejongens Coffeeshop on the Utrechtstraat. Here, the staff are bundled in chic waistcoats, making it an old-fashioned feel. Be warned though: there are few seats and always a queue, so get there early.


Amsterdam clubs are popular with EDM, so you can find a lot of night clubs dedicated to this kind of music.


Right next to the Rijksmuseum, you can discover Paradiso, a Portuguese synagogue-turned-night club. The line-up includes live music — including big-name artists including Tove Lo — and DJs.


Want to have a party all night? Take the free ferry to Amsterdam-Noord and go directly to Shelter, the subterranean nightclub in the A’DAM Tower.

Whether you choose disco, funk or hip-hop to EDM, Disco Dolly is open seven nights a week and draws a lively, youthful crowd.
